Quilt Show Entry Information

Quilt Show Entry Guidelines

  1. An entry form must be submitted for each item entered. You may enter as many categories as you wish; however, only one entry is allowed per category. A flat entry fee of $7.00 for EACH submission must accompany the entry form(s). There is no entry fee for the “youth” or “challenge” or “display only” categories this year but an entry form is still needed. Be sure to complete one entry form and pay $7.00 for each quilt entered.

  2. Entry form must be received by March 15, 2025. Please fill out the online entry form.

  3. Items entered in the judged categories must be made of fabric and consist of three layers held together by quilting, with the exception of the Wool on Wool, Category 11 (see definition under entry categories). Items must be in excellent condition, free of odors, and pet hair. Tied, soiled, or torn quilted items and hard-framed quilts will not be accepted. No false backings will be accepted as the judge must be able to see quilting from the back of the quilt. Items must have been constructed by the exhibitor and must not have previously been entered in the Minot Prairie Quilt Show. All quilts must be labeled with the “quilt identification tag”. All quilts must be left on display until the show closes.

  4. Special techniques include applique, embroidery, crazy patch, stained glass, fused, fringed, photo transfers, painting, couching, mixed media, etc.

  5. The Festival Committee reserves the right to place entries in more appropriate categories. The judge may award duplicate ribbons in any category and reserves the right not to award ribbons if specific category criteria have not been met. All judged entries will receive a written evaluation.

  6. The Minot Prairie Quilt Guild and the ND State Fair Center will not be responsible for damages, loss, or theft of any article during the Quilt Show. During show hours, guild members will patrol the display area. After hours the showroom is locked, and video surveillance will be provided.

  7. Entries are to be brought to the Theater Room near Heritage Hall at the NDSF Center located at 2005 E Burdick Expy, Minot, ND 58701, on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Entries will not be accepted on Thursday, April 3, 2025.

  8. If you are unable to hand deliver your quilts, you may ship your entries to Chelce Detert 2705 4th Ave. NW; Minot, ND 58703. Please include a complete return shipping label and return postage. All entries will be returned as requested by the quilter.

  9. Quilt Show entries will be released for pick-up at 6:30 PM on Saturday, April 5, 2025, and must be picked up no later than 8:30 PM. *THIS IS DIFFERENT FROM PREVIOUS YEARS.

  10. YOU MUST HAVE YOUR PICKUP RECEIPT.

Quilt Show Categories

CLASS 1: Handwork
Includes appliqué piecing or quilting that is predominantly hand work, any size, any technique.

CLASS 2: Bed Quilts
Intended for use on a twin or larger bed (more than 251″ perimeter)
2A – Machine quilted. Quilts entered in this category have been completed on a home machine, midarm, or longarm by someone who does not do quilting for hire. Pieced and quilted by one person.
2B – Professionally quilted edge to edge utilizing pantograph and/or computer quilting programs. If the item contains ANY professional custom quilting it must be entered in CLASS 6A or 6B.

CLASS 3: Throw/Lap/Crib Quilt
Intended for use as such. (Less than 250” perimeter)
3A – Machine quilted. Quilts entered in this category have been completed on a home machine, midarm, or longarm by someone who does not do quilting for hire. Pieced and quilted by one person.
3B – Professionally quilted edge to edge utilizing pantograph and/or computer quilting programs. If the item contains ANY professional custom quilting it must be entered in CLASS 6A or 6B.

CLASS 4: Large Wall Hanging
Intended for use on a wall. (Larger than 161” in perimeter). Any quilting technique.
4A – Machine quilted. Quilts entered in this category have been completed on a home machine, midarm, or longarm by someone who does not do quilting for hire. Pieced and quilted by one person.
4B – Professionally quilted edge to edge utilizing pantograph and/or computer quilting programs.

CLASS 5: Small Wall Hanging
Intended for use on a wall. (160” in perimeter or less) Any quilting technique.
5A – Machine quilted. Quilts entered in this category have been completed on a home machine, midarm, or longarm by someone who does not do quilting for hire. Pieced and quilted by one person.
5B – Professionally quilted edge to edge utilizing pantograph and/or computer quilting programs.

CLASS 6: Professionally Custom Quilted
6A – The quilts in this category have been custom-quilted by a professional quilter and would be considered Small. (Less than 250” in perimeter).
6B – The quilts in this category have been custom-quilted by a professional quilter and would be considered large. (More than 251” in perimeter)

CLASS 7: Holiday Theme
Any item or quilting method. The item must include some quilting. (Less than 325” perimeter)

CLASS 8: Household
Includes table runners, placemats, pillows, kitchen or sewing room accessories, purses/totes, etc. The item must include some quilting.

CLASS 9: Challenge Quilt

CLASS 10: Youth
Made by a person 17 years of age or younger at the time of the entry date. Quilts will be critiqued but not judged. No entry fee is required; however, prize money will be awarded to each entrant.

CLASS 11: Wool on Wool
Two layers of wool (no batting or quilting required). Items may include penny rugs, table runners/toppers, and candle mats.

Class 12: Modern
Must adhere to the following definition: Modern quilts highlight simple, geometric designs, often have large use of negative space, neutral background fabric, and often feature (but not limited to) solid colors. Quilt may be any size.

CLASS 13: Special Techniques
Entries in this category include machine applique, whole cloth, crazy patch, cathedral window, trapunto, photo transfer, and nontraditional or mixed techniques.

CLASS 14: Group
Quilts are made by two or more individuals.

CLASS D: Display Only
Quilts registered in this category will not be judged but on display only.


2025 Quilt Show Judge – Diane Pitchford

Diane has been sewing on a machine since the age of four. Her mother was an avid seamstress but her three sisters never learned to thread a needle. Diane began quilting in the late 70’s and after a 27-year career in the electronics industry, quilting took over her life. She lectures and teaches a variety of quilting classes in addition to being both a longarm and hand quilter. Diane has received numerous quilting awards on the local and national level, including Best of Show, Exemplary Hand Quilting, Exemplary Machine Quilting and Exemplary Workmanship. Diane has been very active in local and national organizations including President of The Arizona Quilters Guild and Show Director for both the National Quilting Association and the AQG. Her major accomplishments include earning the designation of NQA Certified Judge in 2011 and being inducted into the Arizona Quilters Hall of Fame in 2012. To date, Diane has judged over 10,000 quilts. Diane is also a member of the National Association of Certified Quilt Judges.
